A small tree ornament, such as a bauble, a star or a name tag, costs between €6 and €17 (typically about €10), and in a run of 100 it drops to about €3.65 each. A 7.5 cm resin figure costs €15–€40. PLA or resin for Christmas decorations?
PLA (FDM): for almost every ornament
For indoor decorations PLA is the best choice: cheap, rigid and available in hundreds of colours, including matte, glossy, silk and metallic finishes. It softens at around 55 °C, so don't hang it against an incandescent bulb or near a candle. LED lights are fine: they barely get warm.
Resin: for detailed figures
Nativity figures, angels and any small piece you look at closely are better in resin: faces, hands and folds in fine detail, with no visible layers. It's a little more fragile, so don't hang it where it could fall onto a hard floor.
Translucent: for anything with a light
Village houses with a light inside, illuminated stars and lithophanes are printed in white or translucent PLA so the light shows through. Say so in the project if the piece will be lit.
How early should you order for Christmas?
In December many makers have a full queue. Count backwards:
- 1
Offers: 24–48 hours
You post the project and makers send you a price and lead time.
- 2
Printing
A small ornament takes about 20 minutes of machine time; a 20 cm resin figure, about 4 hours. A run of a hundred ornaments takes several days of machine time.
- 3
Finishing
Removing supports, sanding or painting adds days, especially for many pieces.
- 4
Shipping
Each offer says when the maker ships. In December, expect carriers to be slower.
The file: bought, free or personalised
Many free Christmas files carry a “non-commercial” licence. Because the maker charges you to print it, that's already commercial use: look for files whose licence allows it (CC0 or CC BY, for example), buy one with a commercial licence, or have your own design made.
To personalise with names or dates, write the exact text in the project, including capitals and accents, and the font if you have a preference. If you have no file, a maker who designs can model it, quoted separately.
Decorations and decorative figures are the largest group of what reaches the network: 33 of the 110 requests registered between May and October 2026.
How to order your Christmas decorations
- 1Post your project for free: the file, a photo or the idea, with size, colour and the text if it's personalised.
- 2Say when you need it. Makers send you their offer with price and lead time within 24–48 hours.
- 3Compare, choose, and the maker prints it and ships it to you.
Questions about 3D printed Christmas ornaments
How much does a 3D printed Christmas ornament cost?
A small PLA ornament costs between €6 and €17, typically about €10, and a medium one or a small centrepiece €7–€19, excluding VAT and shipping. Hand painted costs more.
How far ahead do I need to order?
Offers arrive within 24–48 hours, but then come printing, finishing and shipping, and everything slows down in December. Order two or three weeks ahead and say in the project when you need it: each offer gives its lead time.
Can an ornament be personalised with a name or year?
Yes, it's one of the most popular requests. Write the exact text in the project, with capitals. If the file doesn't include the name, the maker adds it or models it: design work is quoted separately.
Can I get a missing nativity figure printed?
Yes. Measure the height of a standing adult figure in centimetres and send a photo next to the others. A 7.5 cm resin figure costs €15–€40. It's printed from a licensed file or modelled new: manufacturers' figures aren't copied.
PLA or resin for ornaments?
PLA for almost all of them: cheap, rigid and in hundreds of colours. Resin for figures and small detailed pieces that are looked at closely.
Are they safe next to tree lights?
With LED lights, yes: they barely get warm. PLA softens at around 55 °C, so keep it away from incandescent bulbs and never near a candle.
Can I order ornaments as gifts for clients or staff?
Yes. In runs the unit price drops a lot: 100 small ornaments come to about €3.65 each, excluding VAT and shipping. Your own company logo is fine; other people's logos or characters are not.
Can I print an ornament I downloaded for free?
Only if its licence allows commercial use: the maker charges you to print it, and a “non-commercial” licence doesn't cover that. CC0 or CC BY is fine; otherwise find another file or have your own design made.
Do they arrive painted?
Coloured PLA ornaments arrive ready to hang. Resin figures usually come unpainted, in grey or white; if you want them painted, ask and the maker quotes it separately.
