What's inside the price

Example: a 28 mm resin miniature costs about €9.39 to produce. 80% of that is labour: preparing the file, washing, curing and removing supports. The resin itself barely counts.

  • Labour: 80 %
  • Consumables: 9 %
  • Material: 1 %
  • Machine and power: 1 %
  • Failure margin: 9 %
  • Material: resin at about €17/kg and filament at about €13/kg, plus 25% extra for supports in resin.
  • Machine time: power at €0.20/kWh and wear on the printer, screen or nozzle. In resin it depends on the part's height, not on how many fit on the plate.
  • Consumables per job: isopropyl alcohol, FEP film, gloves and filters for resin; lacquer and cleaning for FDM.
  • Labour: about €15/h. Around 30 minutes per job in resin and 15 in FDM, plus a few minutes per extra part.
  • Failure margin: 10% in resin and 5% in FDM, because not every print works first time.
  • Maker's margin: from ×1.5 (hobby) to ×4 (professional) on top of cost; ×2.5 is typical.

What makes the price go up or down

  • Size and height

More volume means more material, and in resin every millimetre of height is more machine time.

  • Quantity

Ordering several lowers the price per part: one miniature is €23; in a batch of 10, €5.73 each.

  • Technology

FDM is usually cheaper than resin. Resin pays off when you need fine detail.

  • Finishing

Painting, sanding, priming or assembly are quoted separately and can multiply the price.

  • Lead time

Rush jobs (under 3 days) force the maker to reshuffle and usually cost more.

  • 3D file

Without an STL, 3D design is quoted separately depending on how complex it is.

Which is cheaper, resin or FDM?

FDM, almost always. Filament costs less (about €13/kg versus €17/kg for resin) and the part needs less work afterwards: about 15 minutes versus 30 for washing, curing and removing supports. That's why a small FDM spare part is about €10. Resin pays off when detail matters: miniatures, figures, busts and jewellery.

How to pay less for 3D printing

  1. 1Group several parts in one job: setup and cleaning are shared.
  2. 2If the part doesn't need fine detail, order it in FDM.
  3. 3Order with time to spare: avoiding rush jobs is cheaper.
  4. 4Send the STL if you have it: you save on design and get more accurate prices.
  5. 5Compare offers: on Fabrishare several makers write to you with their price and lead time.

Questions about 3D printing prices

How much does 3D printing cost?

A small or medium part usually costs between €6 and €40: a 28 mm resin miniature about €23, a small FDM spare part about €10 and a 20 cm figure about €34. A run of 100 small parts comes to around €365 (€3.65 each). Excluding VAT and shipping; each maker sets the final price.

Why is it so expensive if resin is cheap?

Because the material is the smallest part of it. For a 28 mm miniature, 80% of the cost is labour: preparing the file, washing, curing and removing supports. The resin in a miniature costs just a few cents.

Is it cheaper to print several parts at once?

Yes. Setup and cleaning are shared: one miniature is €23, but in a batch of 10 each one is €5.73. In a run of 100 small FDM parts, €3.65 per part.

Which is cheaper, resin or FDM?

FDM is usually cheaper: filament costs less and the part needs less post-processing. Resin pays off when you need fine detail, as in miniatures, figures or jewellery.

Does the price include VAT and shipping?

No. Ballpark prices are for the whole job excluding VAT and shipping. The maker gives you the final price in their offer.

How much does it cost without a 3D file?

You need to add 3D design, which is quoted separately depending on how complex the part is. Send a photo or a sketch and the makers who design will quote you.
