3D printed parts for outdoor use: which material lasts

Which 3D printing material holds up outdoors?

For outdoor use, the best filament is ASA: it withstands the sun for years without turning brittle and copes with around 90 °C. PETG does well with water and damp, but in direct sun it degrades sooner unless it's painted. PLA doesn't work outside: it warps from around 55 °C, a temperature any part reaches in the summer sun or inside a car. Standard resin doesn't either: sunlight makes it brittle. Say where the part will go in your project («in the sun», «inside the car», «on the boat») and makers will suggest the right material.

Which material copes with what

Typical values for each material; they vary with the filament brand and how the part is printed.

Where your part will go

What matters is the location, not the part. These are the most common cases:

Ask for ASA or PETG for

  • Inside a car, on the dashboard or parcel shelf: in summer they go above 70 °C. ASA or ABS.
  • Garden, terrace and façade, in the sun all year: ASA.
  • Boats and the coast: ASA or PETG. Salt doesn't attack the plastic; what rusts are the screws and inserts, so use stainless steel.
  • Parts that get wet or touch water: PETG.
  • Seals and bumpers that need to give: TPU.

Avoid

  • PLA anywhere it gets sun or heat.
  • Standard resin outdoors without paint.
  • Black or dark colours for parts in the sun: they get much hotter than light ones.
  • Thin walls on load-bearing parts: cold and temperature swings crack them sooner.

How to make it last longer

More walls and more infill

Ask for 3 or 4 perimeters and high infill on parts that carry load or need to be watertight. A printed part isn't fully waterproof: water gets in between layers if the walls are thin.

Paint or UV-filter varnish

On PETG and ABS, a coat of primer and paint, or a varnish with a UV filter, greatly extends their life in the sun.

Layer orientation

A printed part is weakest between layers. If it will take strain, tell the maker which way the load pulls so they can orient it properly.

What we've seen in the network

Of 110 requests recorded on Fabrishare, 6 were functional parts for outdoor use. And the most common mistake is always the same: a PLA part warping in the sun. In the network it happened to a figure that sagged the same afternoon it was put in the sun.

Printing in ASA or PETG barely changes the price of a small part: a small spare part in FDM is around €10 and a medium case or cover around €12 (excluding VAT and shipping).

How to order a part for outdoor use

  1. 1Post your project for free with the file, or photos and measurements if you don't have one.
  2. 2Say where it will go: in the sun, inside a car, in contact with water, on a boat. If you know the material, say so; if not, the maker will suggest one.
  3. 3Get offers with price and lead time within 24–48 hours, compare and choose.

Frequently asked questions

Which filament holds up best in the sun?

ASA. It's made for outdoor use: it resists UV for years without yellowing or turning brittle, and copes with around 90 °C.

Is PLA suitable for outdoor use?

No. It softens from around 55 °C, a temperature a part reaches in the summer sun: it doesn't take months, it softens on the first hot day. Indoors only.

What about PETG?

Yes, in the shade or in contact with water, where it does very well. In direct sun it yellows and weakens over the years unless it's painted or varnished with a UV filter.

Will a printed part survive inside a car in summer?

Only if it's ASA or ABS. A dashboard goes above 70 °C: PLA warps and PETG can give way. Never PLA in a car.

Is a 3D printed part waterproof?

Not entirely. Water can get in between layers if the walls are thin. With 3 or 4 perimeters, high infill and PETG or ASA it's nearly watertight; to be fully watertight it needs sealing.

What should I ask for on a boat part?

ASA if it gets sun, or PETG if it's in the shade or wet. Salt doesn't harm these plastics; for metal screws and inserts, use stainless steel.

Does printing in ASA or PETG cost more?

Very little. On a small part, labour weighs far more in the price than material; ASA just needs an enclosed printer, which not every maker has.
